TOP TEN ON TUESDAY:- Opening Lines

An opening line can - as far as I'm concerned - make or break a story. Some are abysmal, some are okay, some are good and some... some are truly astounding. It takes some skill to hook a reader in with just the first line of a novel and, for me, these ones do it perfectly. This won't be as long as my other top ten lists as I don't really have reasons for liking most of these except that they either tickle me, or make me contemplate life, so apologies in advance for that. Enjoy!
10. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children - Ransom Riggs
"I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen."

9. Peter Pan - J.M Barrie
"All children - except one - grow up."

8. Gone With the Wind - Margaret Mitchell
"Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm like the Tarleton twins were."

7. To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee
"When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem had his arm broken badly at the elbow."

6. Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson
"Like most people I lived for a long time with my mother and father. My father liked to watch the wrestling, my mother liked to wrestle. It didn't matter what. She was in the white corner, and that was that."

5. The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul - Douglas Adams
"It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression 'as pretty as an airport.'"

4. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - C.S. Lewis
"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it."

3. Nineteen eighty-four - George Orwell
"It was bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

2.  Still Life with Woodpecker - Tom Robbins
"If this typewriter can't do it, then fuck it, it can't be done."

1. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams
"The story so far: In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
